A) Right coronal section of a supraspinatus tendon on ultrasound. The articular tear, where the tendon is detached from the bone, is very subtle. All that can be seen is a hypoechoic area (yellow arrow) which could be confused with normal Sharpey fibres (fibrocartilage) and a cortical irregularity (red arrow). B) Coronal section of the same shoulder from a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) arthrogram T2-weighted, fat-saturated sequence, clearly showing a deep surface tear (white arrow).
